Alexandra Grant
In Alexandra Grant's “whisper” works she has taken fragmented wire strands of phrases from Wisława Szymborska’s poem “Possibilities” and run them through a printing press, embossing them into the delicate, metallic paper. Grant then traces the embossing with a sewing machine, leaving the small holes made by the needle and thread hanging.
In her wire filigree work Grant interprets Polish poet Wisława Szymborska’s poem “Possibilities”, tracing the shadow of the wire words in pencil. The weight of the wire, shadow and drawing are the same and sometimes hard to distinguish. This gives makes this sculpture the quality of an optical illusion, questioning the very nature of language itself, something that Szymborska called "unphotographical."

Biography
Alexandra Grant is a Los Angeles-based visual artist who examines language and written texts through painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and other media.
Her work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, MD; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), the Pasadena Museum of California Art, among others, and in a solo ex-hibition at the Orange County Museum of Art, Telepathy Is One Step Further Than Empathy, curated by Cassandra Coblentz. Awards include the COLA Individual Artist Fellowship and The Pollock-Krasner Foundation.
Alexandra is the creator of the grantLOVE project, which has raised funds for arts-based non-profits, including Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA); Project Angel Food; Art of Elysium; 18th Street Ard Center, and LAXART. In 2017, Grant co-founded X Artists' Books, a publishing house for artist-centered books.
