The work reading shadows (2018) forms part of Mark Schreiber’s installation work round letters turn sounds (2018). In this work, Schreiber was keen to explore aspects of translation and his own kind of artistic deciphering
—from texts to sounds and images—for which he chose the anthology Lesebuch (1967) by the concrete poet, Hörspiel author, writer 
and artist Franz Mon. Schreiber was fascinated by its references to sound and by his associations in this book to space, both in content and physically in the pages themselves.

As a final photographic result, reading shadows stems from a collaged copy of the book’s contents page, photos of Schreiber’s own shadows on the pages, and elements that he could use for defining certain parameters in his sound composition. The photograph was printed on both fabric and paper. The sounds come from audio recordings he personally made of Mon performing various activities in his Frankfurter studio. Some sounds were also processed further.
